Tips For Making Your Living Room Feel More Spacious
1. Add in an Area Rug
Start off with a beautiful area rug, it can help define and ground your space while adding beautiful design.
Choose a lighter color to make it feel even larger, especially a color brighter than that of the floor around it.
Even if you have carpet, layer a rug over the carpet to get the most out of your space.

2. Mirrors Can Make your Room Feel Larger
Mirrors are great for reflecting light and giving the illusion of more space in your home. Hang large mirrors across from windows to maximize natural light or place them near dark corners to brighten up the room.
Wall mirrors come in all shapes and sizes, so there is bound to be one that will fit perfectly into your living room design scheme.
I personally really like floor length mirrors like this one from Amazon, to place right by the windows!
3. Choose Open furniture with Legs to Make your Living Room Feel Larger
Choose furniture that has open style bottoms, or furniture with legs. Having these larger pieces lift off the floor will make the room feel more spacious and airy, making the room feel larger than it is.
For example, you can choose a more lightweight feeling coffee table like this one below. It has the perfect width for most rectangular couches, plus the storage functions (and the lift top if you also like to enjoy dinner watching TV sometimes), all without feeling big and clunky.
4. Pick the Right Size of Decor and Furniture
One of the best ways to maximize space in a small living area is to choose furniture pieces that are the right size for your space. Instead of buying a super small sofa or an oversized sofa or sectional, opt for something smaller like an armless loveseat or couch with chaise.
Don’t go for pieces that are too small, because sometimes that will also make the space feel smaller as well.
You can also incorporate multifunctional furniture pieces like ottomans with hidden storage or coffee tables with adjustable heights.
5. Always Follow the Natural Walkways
Keep in mind the natural walkways of your home when decorating. This is very important for the overall feel of your space.
Without these natural walkways the apartment will feel crowded, and these items will feel awkwardly placed. (Make sure to declutter as well, leaving bags or things that block these walkways will make the space feel even smaller).
6. Choose Lightweight Fabrics and Colors
When selecting fabrics for curtains and upholstery, go with lightweight materials like cotton voile instead of heavy brocades or velvet curtains.
This way you won’t feel overwhelmed by too much fabric in the room.
As far as color goes, stick with airy neutrals such as white, cream, and pale blues or greens; these colors will help create an open atmosphere while still being aesthetically pleasing.
