When it comes to decorating, it may seem like you’re limited in what you can do because of the existing structure and layout. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to transform your small bedroom into a cozy place to rest and relax.
We’ll share budget-friendly decor and storage ideas to make your cozy space stylish and functional! Get ready for some creative inspiration to maximize your space and budget. Let’s begin!
Where to start
Choose the Right Furniture
When picking furniture for your bedroom, choosing the right size (not always the smallest size!!) is important for making the room still feel large and giving you all the storage space you will need. It may be your first thought to purchase small furniture to make your room look bigger, but on the contrary, this could make your room feel imbalanced.
Pick out the right headboard and bedframe size for your space. Add in a set of nightstands and a dresser for your space. Tip: Don’t get a matching bedframe and nightstand and dresser set! Mix and match for a more modern look.

Storage Benches
Storage benches are available in various styles to suit different tastes in small bedroom decor on a budget. They provide seating and hidden storage space.
By incorporating hidden storage options, these benches help maximize storage in small bedrooms, making them perfect for decluttering and organizing. There are also so many different finishes and decorative pillow options to put on top – allowing for personal touches while serving a practical purpose.
Find The Right Medium Sized Area Rug
Pick an area rug based on the size of your bed for the best look. Adding the right size area rug adds a beautiful focal point while bringing in style.
The rug should fit under your bed while still leaving room on either side of the bed for the rug to show. You may also want your area rug to go underneath your nightstand design on what look you prefer.
For example, for a queen bed, a 6×9 area rug will fit under your bed and allow a lot of space on the rug to show. It will be partially in front of your nightstands depending on their size.

Tip: Large Mirrors will Make your Space Seem Larger
Full length mirrors are great to have in your bedroom. They are nice to have while you’re getting ready. They also can help create the illusion of a bigger space by reflecting more light in your space. If you can place the mirror closer to the window as well, it’ll brighten up the space even more.
You can choose from hanging a mirror on the wall or you can find one with a stand or base to avoid drilling holes in your walls.
Create Visual Interest with Wall Art
Wall art is an easy way to make any room feel more inviting and give it personality.
There are endless options depending on your personal design style. Choose a size that fits your small nicely, having wall decor that is too small can actually give the appearance of a smaller room and can make things feel cramped.
Choosing the right size artwork makes the space feel larger and better designed. You shouldn’t settle for pieces that don’t truly fit your space the best. When hanging your artwork a few good guidelines are to pick pieces 2/3 to 3/4 the size of furniture and hang the middle of pieces around eyelevel.
No-Wire Wall Sconces
This has been going around the internet for a while now, and I love this renter-friendly lighting hack. A lot of apartment bedrooms won’t have overhead lighting. Adding lamps for your nightstands is one way to bring in light, but if you’re trying to save space or light the look of lighting this hack is a great idea.
You can also find wall sconces available specifically made to be used with no wiring needed.
Start by finding the perfect pair of wall sconces to add to your bedroom. Then there are a few ways to do this without wiring, you can choose to add in a puck light or LED lights you can control with your phone. These may require a bulb adaptor.
Adding Comfort with Accent Pieces
Accent Pillow
Choosing the right size and shape for accent pillows in a small bedroom can be really fun and budget-friendly. Consider opting for a variety of sizes and textures to add visual interest. Arrange pillows in groups of odd numbers for a balanced look.
When selecting colors and textures, mix both patterns and fabrics for visual interest (I’ve written a whole post on mixing patterns like a pro).
Cozy Quilt
A cozy quilt can easily add comfort and warmth to a bedroom decor. You can layer it on the bed or drape it over a chair for a cozy atmosphere.
Plants as Decor
Don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb (I have a list of hard to kill houseplants ready for ya!) – you can even consider faux plants too. Plants are great for small bedrooms. They add visual appeal and bring nature indoors. Plus they can be super affordable!
Place small potted plants on shelves, desks, or by windows. Plant them within various styles of pots, upcycle glass containers or even small hanging planters (images for inspo below).
