How to make your home look more expensive tip#1: Choose a color palette and paint
Having a color story per room can really make everything feel coherent and comfortable without breaking the bank. This could be as simple as just swapping some of the furniture or pieces out of one room and into another! But the idea is to just have a unified look and feel per room. Sometimes a fresh colored paint can make a huge difference. Choose a neutral color paints like soft grays or crisp whites.
My favourite color palette this season are dark moody greys, greens and cream colors. Or you could do lighter colors, various wood tones mixed with matte black accents.
How to make your home look more expensive tip #2: Furniture Updates
A great way to make your home look expensive on a budget is to refresh some of the major pieces in your home. You can do these multiple different ways with many different pieces you already have. This will help you save money by not needing to go out and buy new large expensive pieces.
Some examples of easy DIY upgrades you can give your home for a more expensive look:
- Spray paint your coffee table legs matte black or gold to give it a luxury feel.
- Refinish your tv stand, end tables, or dining table a beautiful stain to go with the rest of your decor and to give it a great update. But don’t make all the wood stains the same color – this takes away from visual interest!
- Update hardware on nightstands, dressers, and cabinets for a completely different look!
- Change the feet on your sofa or chairs to change the style.
- Find (Or make!) new covers for sofa cushions to change the color of your sofa or hide any old or stained cushions!
- Under your cabinet, install an affordable LED strip lights for lighting and ambiance.
Doing this can give every item in your home an inexpensive makeover. You’d be surprised how much impact these little changes will have on your home!

#3. Light fixtures can make or Break a Space
When giving your space a new expensive look, lighting matters so much! These can make or break your space. Having an old cheap light fixture or even just a lot of top-down lighting can really drag down a room, replace it with more modern options. You can find a lot of affordable yet styli.sh lamps on amazon and other marketplaces.
But light fixtures can get expensive! So, you can opt for these rechargeable light bars instead from Amazon. They last a long time, and you don’t have to worry about fiddling with electricity! They would look great above picture frames or other areas when you want to add accents to decor.
This pair of gold sconces are battery powered as well and look so beautiful! I first saw them on TikTok and they look so high end! They really elevate a room.
On a note related to lighting, if you have a smaller space, one of my favourite tips is to add a floor length mirror by the window. This really makes the space feel bigger and brighter!
#4. Don’t overlook small details when trying to make your home look expensive on a budget
Although you may think you want to stick to the simple things and make your to-do list as short as possible to stick to your budget, there are some small and very inexpensive upgrades you should do to get the most out of your design!
A cheap and easy example is to update light switches! You can even grab a $1 picture frame from the dollar tree and place this around your light switch for an expensive-looking upgrade.
Tip #5. Update curtains for cheap to create an expensive look
Give your curtains a nice update as well to create an expensive look that costs next to nothing! Curtains can eat up any budget, but these ideas you can stretch the budget even further without lacking is design.
Create a rope tie back with a simple hook on your wall. You can create many different looks for this depending on what material you use. Some examples you can use include rope, chain or braided yarn or cotton. You can use anything you think would look best for your space. Each material has a bit different method to make, you can jump on Youtube and search for a quick tutorial for your exact material!
