How To Create The Modern Farmhouse Design Style
Rustic Textures
The added texture of rustic woods in each room help to soften the overall design of the home. It gives a beautiful rustic look in the home, a great feature in the modern farmhouse style.
This can be added in many ways around the home. Find furniture pieces in natural wood tones such as a grand dining table or beautiful tv stand. You can even try to take on your own DIY to add your own touch and bring in a fun vintage piece with a modern new look. Check out our DIY Tv stand here.
Antique wood accents around the home really bring out the farmhouse look or use wooden crates as both storage and decor statements with added pillows and blankets to soften the look.
Fabric & Other Natural Textures
Adding fun prints on fabrics and textures is the perfect way to add to the farmhouse style. Finding earthy green throw pillows or a blue striped throw blanket would look perfect on a neutral-colored sofa.
Organic and natural materials set the groundwork of a modern farmhouse. Go for natural linens and cotton for a beautiful pop of texture. Another key is to add a pop of color where you want but not too overpowering.
Rugs will also help soften up the design as well and help ground your space. Adding a neutral rug will add more texture, give your space a more cozy feel but won’t be too overpowering in the room.
Metal Fixtures
Metal is another staple of the modern farmhouse. Look for pieces that also serve a purpose, or did at one time. Practical pieces come from the origin of this design style. When you think farmhouse you probably imagine old vintage pieces that were most likely passed down from generations or once used on the farm itself. These items make for beautiful statement decor pieces in the modern farmhouse design.
Consider adding industrial style lighting. You can add pendants in the kitchen, a chandelier above the dining table or a floor lamp in the living room in a beautiful black metal design.
You can add metal in other ways too such as railings, artwork, and accent pieces. Try a galvanized metal bin for a great storage piece plus by adding extra blankets and throw pillows you can soften the design and add in textures just as we talked about for the wooden box.

Earthy & Neutral tones
A neutral color pallet is the base of farmhouse design. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t add pops of color! Add dark blues or greens for a bold statement in your farmhouse design. Add buttermilk yellow to keep a space bright yet colorful. This will still help your space look fresh and clean, without being only black and white.
Adding cream or white in the main living space will allow the rest of the materials in this design to really stand out. It also gives the space fresh modern feel and can help make a room feel more light & airy.
Allow the main components to be very neutral with added pops of color in your accent pieces, or one bold accent wall.
Greenery
Greenery help liven up a room and can also improve the quality of your air if you opt for living plants! Whether you opt for real or faux, plants are another great piece to incorporate into your modern farmhouse design.

Dried flowers are very often used in modern farmhouse designs too. They can add additional color and help bring the outdoors inside like a true farmhouse style!
Add this to other elements as well. Find or create your own plant stands using natural materials. Wooden buckets, galvanized tins and mason jars all make for beautiful planters.
