Recently farmhouse styles have been becoming more popular (with the rise of remote work, more people can have the freedom to move further out and opt for a quieter living environment). It’s one of my favourite decor styles because it combines natural elements with simple modern touches to create spaces that are so homey and comfortable but stylish at the same time.
This post today is to really give you some farmhouse styling tips and inspiration. I’ve got a few ideas to get you started, with a few furniture finds links too. If you like this post, be sure to check out my latest on 100 Modern Farmhouse Decor Finds Under $100 at Interiors by Abbey.

How to Create Your Perfect Farmhouse Rustic Living Room
1. Shiplap walls, wooden floors, and exposed beams
Having a ton of wooden elements is a farmhouse staple! It adds a rustic natural touch and a sense of warmth, making your living room feel instantly more inviting. Mixing various wood tones (or even paint washing wooden elements) can be a great way to get this vibe. If you’re not able to use shiplap or customize a rental, you can also use peel-and-stick wallpaper as an alternative!
Exposed beams are another key element in farmhouse design, and they don’t always have to be in the original wooden color (you could paint them white to add in more of a spacious feel). They add architectural interest and a touch of rustic charm. You can create a similar look with faux beams.
2. Farmhouse rustic elegance
Farmhouses have that sort of worn and loved charm and you can add that with vintage finds like old pitchers for flower vases, rustic statement pieces etc. Make your own mirror frame from an old window (mirror elements are great for making your space look bigger too), or use pretty recycled glass jars as decorations.
3. Rustic farmhouse with natural earthy tones and elements
For a natural farmhouse living room, swap in clay pots and wicker baskets. Fill them with plants and greenery for a touch of the outdoors. Cozy up with textured throws and pillows made from comfy cotton, linen, or burlap (in natural colors. It’s a simple way to bring a bit of farmhouse nature inside!
If you weren’t born with a green thumb, not to worry! I have a list of hard of kill plants here to start with!
4. Add your personal touch
Now for the fun part! Let your favourite guitar take center stage, add in your family photo frames of various sizes and fill your walls with ‘live love laugh’ decor (no just kidding on that one).
These personal touches should add personality and joy when you see them!
The options are endless when it comes to decor items! Add in lots of what makes you happy :). As always, our home should be a place of tranquility and comfort but also represent your personality and style!
Tip* Before you start adding more decor – you can also try taking away any clutter or removing existing distracting decor pieces (sometimes more blank space adds airyness and a balance).
